DeRolph v. State of Ohio: 10th Anniversary of Landmark School Funding Ruling
The Ohio Supreme Court issued its landmark ruling March 24, 1997 declaring the state's method of funding public education unconstitutional. In 2007, most agree it still is, including Ohio's newly elected governor. While the original and subsequent Supreme Court decisions represented a major symbolic victory for education advocates seeking equitable public education opportunities statewide, the lack of fundamental changes at the legislative level means little progress has been made to diminish inadequacies that drove the case of DeRolph v. State of Ohio.
The lawsuit's namesake, Nathan DeRolph, is 31. The Perry County school district he attended on the fringe of Appalachia is one of many in Ohio that continues to struggle financially to provide a basic education for its students, due to the continued state overreliance on local property taxes to fund school budgets.
